Motus Traffic Wins A38 Saltash Tunnel Refurbishment Contract
Motus Traffic Ltd. has been awarded a contract for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a Public Address system and Automatic Incident Detection system for the Saltash Tunnel in Cornwall, United Kingdom. This turnkey contract also includes upgrading the existing fibre optic transmission link between the tunnel and the Tamar Bridge Control centre 3 km north on the busy A38 Trunk road.
The two systems have been designed by Motus Traffic to meet with the stringent requirements of the Highways Agency consultants, Symonds Group Limited. The P.A. system has five zones of address designed in such a way that if one area of one of the zones is damaged by fire there is redundancy to ensure safe public address to users of the tunnel. Sixty loudspeaker horns are to be installed down both sides of the tunnel to distribute evenly messages transmitted from the Tamar Bridge control room.
The second system being installed is an Automatic Incident Detection system. This system has been designed using the world leading Autoscope intelligent video detection camera network. Nine cameras have been installed and when commissioned will provide for automatic reporting of "stopped vehicles" and detection of "smoke" throughout the tunnel road deck. Alarms given at the Tamar Bridge Control centre give location information to help the management of any incident.
Two additional Autoscope cameras are being installed at the tunnel portals to gather traffic data such as volume, occupancy, average speed and vehicle counts by direction as well as classification by length.
The Saltash contract follows successful deployment of the system in the Clyde Tunnel as well as installations in Birmingham and Leicester. This non-intrusive system is finding favour with government customers and consultants due to the ease of set up, flexible operation and large savings in traffic management costs during installation.
